چکیده

S1-Movie 01: Rendering of the simulation data for model basalt liquid at 2200 K by drawing spheres, which are constantly moving around. The atomic species are represented by different colors: Ca (dark green), Mg (light green), Al (Magenta), Si (blue) and O (red). Because of the periodic boundary conditions used, the atoms going out of the simulation box from one side enter the box through the opposite side.

Structure and density of basaltic melts at mantle conditions from first-principles simulations

The origin and stability of deep-mantle melts, and the magmatic processes at different times of Earth's history are controlled by the physical properties of constituent silicate liquids. Here we report density functional theory-based simulations of model basalt, hydrous model basalt and near-MORB to assess the effects of iron and water on the melt structure and density, respectively. Our result...

SolEx: A model for mixed COHSCl-volatile solubilities and exsolved gas compositions in basalt

We present a software application, SolEx, to calculate basaltic melt and coexisting vapour compositions in the system C–O–H–S–Cl. Such a model has great utility in interpreting emitted gas and melt inclusion compositions, especially through the incorporation of sulphur and chlorine, the most commonly measured volcanic gas species. We assume that the behaviour of the fluid phase is controlled by...

Can in situ measurements of mantle electrical conductivity be used to infer properties of partial melts?

[1] Constraints on bulk conductivity from magnetotelluric measurements and petrological analyses of late Quaternary peridotite xenoliths from the southern Sierra Nevada allow evaluation of models commonly used to relate electrical conductivity to the physical and chemical state of the upper mantle. In these models, two conductive melts (basalt and sulfide) are embedded in a resistive matrix. Bo...

The Structure and Magnetic Properties of Co77Zr18W5 Melt-Spun Ribbons

Based on X-ray diffraction, microscopic and magnetic analysis, the structure and magnetic properties of Co77Zr18W5 melt-spun ribbons were studied in this paper. A new element to stabilize the metastable Co5Zr phase was found and the coercivity observed in Co-Zr alloys can be obviously enhanced by proper tungsten substitution. The Curie temperature of Co77Zr18W5 ribbons is 475 ̊C which suggests t...

Microwave Melting and Drilling of Basalts

The paper presents two experimental methods for basalt processing by microwaves, and their results. One method employs a single-mode cavity to melt basalt, and to produce a volcanic glass (obsidian). The other method uses an open-end applicator (i.e. a microwave drill [1]) to form holes in basalt rocks. Experimental observations of the basalt interactions with microwaves in these two schemes ar...
